Where to Stay in the Cotswolds: The Best Mid-Range and Luxury Stays

The Cotswolds is one of England’s most picturesque regions, dotted with golden-stone villages, rolling hills and charming market towns. Choosing the right base can make your trip even more magical, whether you want a cosy inn, a boutique hotel or a grand country house.

Here is my guide to some of the best places to stay, split into mid-range and luxury options, with approximate price ranges so you know what to expect before booking.

Mid-Range Options

If you want comfort and character without spending a fortune, these are excellent choices.

The Old Stocks Inn, Stow-on-the-Wold

Set in a 17th-century coaching inn, The Old Stocks Inn blends historic charm with contemporary design. The central location makes it easy to explore Stow and neighbouring Bourton-on-the-Water. Rooms generally cost between £120 and £200 per night, making it one of the best value boutique stays in the region.

The Lygon Arms, Broadway

Right on Broadway’s famous high street, The Lygon Arms is a classic coaching inn with a spa, stylish bar and inviting lounge with open fires. Rates typically start at around £180 and go up to £260 or more for larger rooms, though you can often find good deals if you book a little off-season.

Barnsley House, near Cirencester

This beautiful country house has gorgeous gardens, a small spa and a restaurant serving seasonal dishes. Rooms are typically around £200 to £300 per night, though the more luxurious options can go higher. It is perfect if you want a quiet, romantic escape with a boutique feel.

Luxury Escapes

For travellers who want to make their stay a truly indulgent experience, these are some of the most luxurious hotels in the Cotswolds.

Dormy House Hotel & Spa, Broadway

A design-forward country house perched above Broadway, Dormy House has an exceptional spa, chic interiors and a superb restaurant. Prices for the smaller “intimate” rooms start from around £300, while suites and top-notch rooms are closer to £480 or more per night.

Soho Farmhouse, Great Tew

This is the countryside retreat for Soho House members, with rustic-chic cabins, a lake, spa and multiple restaurants. Rooms typically start around £295 per night, rising considerably for larger cabins and houses. If you have access, this is one of the most exclusive and atmospheric stays in the region.

Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa, Colerne

Just outside the southern edge of the Cotswolds, Lucknam Park is a grand country house hotel offering Michelin-starred dining, an equestrian centre and an extensive spa. Rooms start around £350 to £400 per night and go upwards of £600 for suites. It’s a splurge, but the estate setting and service make it worthwhile.

Tips for Choosing Your Base

If you want to explore the northern Cotswolds, staying around Broadway, Chipping Campden or Stow-on-the-Wold is ideal. For a more central base, Cirencester gives you easy access to many villages and walking trails. If you plan to combine your trip with a visit to Oxford, Bath or Blenheim Palace, staying near the southern or eastern edges can save travel time.

Wherever you stay, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends. Many of these hotels offer special packages such as spa breaks or “three nights for the price of two” deals, so keep an eye out for those to get the best value.
