Why Westonbirt Arboretum Is the Ultimate Autumn Day Out You’ll Fall For

If you’re looking for the best autumn colours in the UK, there’s one place that absolutely steals the show… Westonbirt Arboretum. Located near Tetbury in the heart of the Cotswolds, this spectacular woodland transforms every autumn into a fiery sea of red, orange and gold.

It’s one of the most photogenic spots in England during autumn, and whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or just your camera, you’ll soon see why it’s often called the UK’s most beautiful autumn destination.

Where Is Westonbirt Arboretum?

Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, is just outside Tetbury in Gloucestershire, around 30 minutes from Bath and an hour from Bristol. It’s managed by Forestry England and is home to around 2,500 species of trees from across the globe.

With over 600 acres of woodland, there’s more than enough space to explore, unwind, and take in those breathtaking autumn views. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll, a full day of adventure or even a run among the trees, there’s something here for every age and ability.

WHERE TO STAY IN THE COTSWOLDS

Best Time to Visit Westonbirt Arboretum in Autumn

The magic usually peaks between mid-October and early November, when the famous Japanese maples (acers) burst into colour.

If you can, visit early in the morning for peaceful walks under a misty canopy or late afternoon for that warm, golden-hour glow. Weekdays tend to be quieter, making it easier to take in the views (and snap those Insta-worthy photos) without the crowds.

Things to Do at Westonbirt Arboretum in Autumn

Start of the Treetop Walkway

There’s more to Westonbirt than just admiring the trees, although they are definitely the main event. Here are some highlights not to miss:

1. Wander the Old Arboretum

This is the classic, postcard-perfect section — think sweeping vistas, historic tree collections, and all the drama you could ask for. Every corner looks like it belongs on a calendar.

Please note, unfortunately dogs are not allowed within this section of the arboretum.

2. Explore Silk Wood

Silk Wood is more natural and wild, perfect for long autumn walks. It’s also dog-friendly, so your four-legged friend can enjoy the colours too. The trails here feel peaceful and remote, even when the car park is full. In my opinion this is where the best vibrant red maple trees are located!

3. Walk the Famous Treetop Walkway

For a unique perspective, head up to the Treetop Walkway, which lifts you high above the forest floor for panoramic views across the canopy. It’s one of the best spots for photos, especially when the autumn light filters through the leaves.

4. Enjoy Coffee and Cake at the Westonbirt Café

After all that walking, reward yourself with something delicious at the on-site café. A hot chocolate and a slab of cake while surrounded by autumn leaves? Yes, please.

5. Visit the shop and gallery

Be sure to pop into the Westonbirt Shop before you leave. It’s full of lovely nature-inspired gifts, from books and homeware to local produce and seasonal treats — perfect for a little souvenir or thoughtful present.

Next door, the on-site gallery features beautiful artwork and photography inspired by the arboretum, often created by local artists. It’s a small but charming space that captures the spirit of Westonbirt in every season.

6. Do a spot of bird watching

Keep an eye out for the hidden birdwatching hut, tucked away along one of the quieter trails. It’s the perfect spot to pause, stay quiet and see how many different species you can spot flitting through the trees. From colourful tits to busy sparrows, Westonbirt’s woodland is full of feathered visitors — you just need a bit of patience and a keen eye.

Top Tips for Visiting Westonbirt Arboretum

  • Book tickets online — entry slots can sell out during peak season. Pick an early session to avoid the crowds!

  • Wear sturdy footwear — it’s a woodland, not a catwalk, and it can get muddy.

  • Bring layers — British autumn weather is as changeable as ever.

  • Take your camera — or at least clear your phone storage before you go!

  • Pick up a map at the entrance to plan your route through the Old Arboretum and Silk Wood.

If you are visiting Westonbirt Arboretum, make sure to stop by the large “Today at Westonbirt” sign near the entrance. It’s an excellent place to start your visit, as it lists everything happening that day — from guided walks and exhibitions to seasonal trails and shop opening times.
